Apple - Blenheim Orange
Description:Blenheim Orange is a well known English heritage apple. It's fruit is yellow-gold with orange flush and a few broad, broken red stripes. Flesh is creamy white, somewhat coarse-textured and rather dry. Nutty, aromatic flavour and a sweet crumbly texture. When baked it keeps it's shape, flavour and colour and will produce a thick puree. Admirable in Tarte Tatin, French Apple Tart and also an excellent apple to serve with a cheese board. Also eats and keeps very well into the New Year. An old favourite!
History:Discovered growing against a boundry wall of Blenheim Park by Mr Kempster at Woodstock near Blenheim, Oxfordshire in about 1740. It became known after it was renamed after the nearby Blenheim Palace in 1804 and was distributed in about 1818. Received Banksian medal from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1822.
